Gentle spring detox for the body and mind

Release the old to make space for the new

Spring is my favourite season – and not just as a season on the calendar. It’s the beginning of a cycle of Nature’s renewal and movement. But for the new to be born, something old has to be released. In spring we make space for new energies, new processes, new forms. We talk about ‘spring cleaning’ of our homes and neighbourhoods. Do you call it also “Easter cleaning” as we do in Bulgaria?
Besides our homes, we, too, deserve the same seasonal care. Cleaning, cleansing, detoxing of the body and mind.

Lately, I’ve been completely immersed in my newest creation — the blog you are reading right now. Being my current project of passion, it has pulled me unnoticed into longer hours in front of the screen.

Who walks who?

Such a blessing are our two energetic dogs (you see the younger one, Ritta, on the photo). I take them out in the morning and evening, and sometimes once more. Whether I feel like doing it or not, this task gives me several healthy breaks every day – times two, as I walk every dog on their own. This “forces” me to get out in nature in the nearby park. I move, I switch my focus, the lush green of the young leaves and grass calms my eyes.

So I am not complaining about it, I am truly grateful. It actually feels that the dogs walk me out, not I – them.

In the Taoist and Chinese medicine traditions, Spring’s colour is green. Spring is governed by the Wood element — the energy of growth, clarity, flexibility, and vision. It is associated with the Liver, the organ responsible for clearing out what the body no longer needs.
Emotionally, the Liver holds frustration and anger — making this a good time to clear both our physical and emotional residue. We can think about clearing our relationships in a similar manner. But we will not talk about it today as it is a huge theme deserving a space on its own.

Body detox — gently and with care

Winter naturally invites stillness and heaviness in our bodies. Spring calls for lightness and movement. We can support this movement by putting the right food into our bodies. Personally, diets were never something I liked to do, except for trying the blood type eating many years ago. I like to listen to my body and be gentle with it. I give it what it naturally craves: more greens, more water and juicy fruits, more walking and time under the sun.

Hydrate to ease elimination and get more energy

Keep a bottle of water in your bag

Pure water taste so delicious! I am such an easy guest, no need for special drinks for me when I visit you at home, a glass of water is fine. I developed the habit to drink filtrated water on my trip to remote places in India in 2007. My brand of choice for water filters has always been Britta – and here is one of their really convenient solutions, a self-cleaning bottle.

Herbal or plant infusions

Warm water, plain or with added ginger or apple cider vinegar, is usually my first drink in the morning. Fresh brew from fig or mulberry leaves (like in this photo), nettles or lemonbalm is what I enjoy at any time of the day.

Yes, I love greens! When we lived in the village, I would always have “weeds” on our table in salads, soups, frittatas or herbal infusions. Chickweed, nettles, dandelion greens, dock leaves, purslane – it was fun picking them fresh from our yard.

Always at hand – healthy and convenient

Now, while I still crave green veggies, I’m cautious about buying from the store, especially when the vegetables are still out of season. Industrially grown produce is often heavily treated, and I became more aware of this years ago when my younger son developed a strong sensitivity to chemicals. That’s why we shifted how we shop and eat — I began sourcing more organic products and cooking at home.

I have a list of local farmers who grow their vegetables and fruits organically. Another choice which has worked well for years is to keep a stock of organic superfoods in the cupboard. I’ve tried many brands over the years, but these are the greens I currently use and love: LiveGood, a mix of 17 organic plants, roots, and fruits, enforced with yogurt probiotic bacteria.

LiveGood Super Greens have become a light and simple way to nourish myself without overcomplicating my mornings. I often buy them in a set with a few other wellness products, with free international shipping. (If you’re already browsing the store, just search “international” to find that bundle.)

These greens are part of how I start my day — I sip my green almond milk shake while I walking the dogs in the morning. This usually keeps me comfortably full until noon.

Release the weight with love

If, like me, you are working on releasing a bit of weight — in my case, because of a knee injury — the organic coffee with functional mushrooms is a surprisingly delicious support. It is available from the same store as the Super Greens, along with other products for cleansing and detox. Check out the Hydration Amplifier and the Chlorophyll & Zeolite Detox blend – for good elimination, our body needs to be well hydrated.

Simple visualisation – close your eyes

When you feel you are a bit heavier than what’s comfortable, do this simple visualisation: close your eyes, and imagine the weight, emotional or physical, leaving your body. Say lovingly and with gratitude goodbye to it, acknowledging that it has been with you for a reason. Inhale and exhale gently. On every breath out visualize wieght leaving your body. On every breath in visualise lightness, joy and freedom enetring your system.

Are you already looking ahead to summer and thinking about feeling great at the beach? You can choose a targeted weight support solution, like the Lean Body formula in the LiveGood shop .
Among all great organic products which I have at home, I choose one or two things at a time based on how I feel and what my body wants.

Mental and emotional detox — reduce your inner overload

Our minds can accumulate as much clutter as our homes. And our emotions, too, can become congested — especially if we move through life on autopilot or stay in environments that do not support our well-being.

Spring is a wonderful time to bring our attention on slowing down. Make a pause and gently notice how you feel. Becoming more emotionally aware can be as simple as starting to observe how certain places, people, activities — and even foods — affect our emotional state. Noticing these patterns allows us to respond with more care and clarity. This season, I intentionally notice what thoughts no longer support the direction I want to go, and I make gentle shifts where I can.

A few practices that help me are:

  • I often begin my day with journaling to clear the mental static or to provoke emotional release (which I try to do weekly). For years I have been using both a structured Panda planner and beautifully designed notebooks for focus and inspiration.
  • I take walks without my headphones, just me, the dogs, and the rhythm of nature in the nearby park.
  • Occasionally I set aside “no input mornings” by staying away from screens.
  • I notice the thoughts, mental and emotional states that drain me, acknowledge them, take a note to process them and discover the root, and then switch to my support systems. I play energising music, dance, look at uplifting art, paint, and intentionally reset my mindset.

Spring invites me to create more space for new ideas to land. I clear my mental clutter and find comfort in the quiet before the ideas arrive.

Digital detox — love for our wired bodies

When we talk about digital detox, the focus is usually on the screen time. Beyond the strain it causes to our eyes, the immobility (stiff neck and shoulders) and the bigger impact by the sedentary lifestyle, there is something more.

We have to consider how technology affects our bodies through prolonged exposure to electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs).
I’ve been sensitive to electronics since childhood, when my father would bring me to his electronics lab where he taught college students. I have been very involved in the topic since then.

EMF – Electro-magnetic frequencies

Today, we are almost always and everywhere surrounded by devices — computers, phones, Wi-Fi routers and 5G antennas. The emissions from them can subtly, yet powerfully, affect our nervous system and energy. Some – less, others – more.

For anyone who feels the strain of too much tech — whether through fatigue, sleep disruption, or difficulty focusing — it is worth exploring ways to minimise the EMF exposure.

Defender Shield is the brand of the protective screens for all our computers and mobile phones at home. It offers various solutions for reducing the effect of these EM emissions, especially around the head and hands where we use our devices most.

Healthy digital habits that also boost productivity

I have made a few simple digital tidy-ups that makes it easier to find what I am looking for and minimise my time in front of the computer:

  • Clearing the desktop space, closing tabs, and archiving unused tools on my notebook
  • Deleting read newsletters and emails once a mont
  • Using Notion to create better order in the information I access daily.

And I am still working on setting clearer boundaries around my work time — especially at night, when screen exposure can disrupt the body’s natural wind-down process.

I don’t mean to cause digital guilt. But I believe it is important to be more intentional. Many of us — including conscious parents — are thinking more deeply about how screen exposure shapes our health and our children’s development. From a very young age, children are being introduced to devices. Rather than blame, I see this as a shared opportunity to pause, recalibrate, and make more conscious choices. It is less about restriction and more about care — for the mind, the body, and the space we create to live, work, rest and be present.

What if detox was not a discipline, but a way to come closer to yourself?

Living with the season, not against it

Nature moves through cycles, small ones and big ones — and so do we. Spring is the time for starting fresh, setting intentions, and planting ideas. Summer calls for bold action and full expression. Autumn invites us to harvest, to reflect and begin releasing. Winter brings stillness, rest, and integration. Living in harmony with these patterns help us discover our own natural rhythm — when to go all in, when to slow down, and when to simply be.

Let’s look at the cleansing processes more gently – we can see them as shifts. Or returns – to our nature, to ourselves, to harmony. To lightness, spaciousness and joy.

My spring detox for body and mind doesn’t rely on extremes

it starts with intention. It can feel gentle and nourishing — not forced or rigid. We decide how and what we want it to be:

  • Choosing ease instead of effort when that feels possible
  • Following lightness rather than clinging to unnecessary structure
  • Listening to how I feel rather than only following the calendar or my tasks list.

These days, my detox looks like this: a longer walk in the fresh air, drinking about eight glasses of water (many more in the summer), a morning glass of greens, a quiet journaling session, and a calm night. If you want to start using vitamins and supplements but are not sure where to start from, take this free online health assessment and you will receive a free personalised recommendation.

The gentle way is powerful

As is the running water that cuts canyons in the hard rocks, drop by drop.

My coaching clients always hear me quoting Lao Tzu:

A journey of thousand miles starts with a single step.

You do not need to overhaul everything, nor to hustle into health – emotional, mental or physical. You can begin with one simple adjustment and allow your body and mind to respond.

Spring is not the time to force. It’s the time to support what is already unfolding.

Let the season guide you. And let it be light.

With joy and lightness,
Iskra
